Off the Beaten Path

There are many hidden culinary gems around the island that often only “the islanders” are familiar with and will frequent. Every visitor yearns to learn where the locals go. These gems are often off the beaten path, not advertised in the traditional tourism literature, but well worth the discovery.

The Chocolate Factory (Victoria-by-the-Sea)

A quaint village by the sea sets the scene for the best chocolate coffee you will have ever tasted. Called Heavenly Chocolate Coffee for a reason – they coat the coffee cup with melted chocolate, pour in coffee and top with real whipped cream A Chocolate lovers haven, the Chocolate Factory is family-owned and there are many other hand-made delights to tempt you – try the peppermint chocolates – to die for! Take your time, the village has many treasures to explore from galleries, theatre, inns, and of course seaside beauty abound.

Sheltered Harbour Restaurant (Fortune)

This is not your typical gas station restaurant… they are famous for their Lobster Rolls – the best in PEI many say. The seafood chowder is also island renowned and the talk of the island.

Ricks Fish & Chips (St. Peter's Bay)

When you live on an Island in the sea, you would think there would be endless arguments as to where to get the best fish and chips. That isn't the case on Prince Edward Island, because there is a surprising consensus that awards the prize to Rick's Fish & Chips in St. Peter's Bay. It doesn't hurt to have a fabulous location looking up St Peter's Bay.

Dalvay by the Sea (Dalvay)

One of the most beautiful settings on Prince Edward Island, Dalvay-by-the-Sea was built in 1859 as a summer home for Alexander MacDonald, one-time President of Standard Oil. It is now one of the most gracious seaside resorts on the island located within the National Park. Besides the stunning scenery, no visit would be complete without trying their famous dessert – Sticky Date Pudding. It has been a mainstay of tea at Dalvay for more than a decade. You won’t be disappointed.

PEI Preserve Company (New Glasgow)

The PEI Preserve Company is nestled within the beautiful hills of New Glasgow. The scenery is stunning with gardens surrounding. Meet the owner, Bruce McNaughton – the man in the kilt – he is a mainstay. This little preserve factory has many surprising tastes like Champagne and Raspberry or Grand Marnier and Strawberry preserves. But no visit is complete unless you try their famous Raspberry & Cream Cheese pie.

Cheeselady’s Gouda (North Winsloe)

Many islanders visit the farm to buy fresh island gouda cheese direct from the source. Visit the farm, observe from the viewing windows, or visit with the calves, sheep, and llamas. Sample their unique flavoured cheeses such as garlic, peppercorn, onion and herb.

Kim Dormaar & Son’s Medallion Smoked Salmon (Ebeneezer)

Smokin Good! Visit the small family operated fish smoking plant or visit them at the Charlottetown Famer’s Market. Incorporated in 1994, their products are served in some of the finest restaurants from Tokyo to Miami and across Canada.

They smoke the fish in the Old World way! They combine traditional European craftsmanship with all natural ingredients. Kim starts with fresh Atlantic salmon from selected growers. Myriad View Artisan Distillery (Rollo Bay)

Myriad View is the Island’s first independent Artisan distillery. They are the home of Strait Shine…the only legal moonshine anywhere. The pride of the distillery is the state of the art copper still imported from Germany.

Cows Ice Cream (Charlottetown)

Cows Ice Cream is an institution on Prince Edward Island. Readers’ Digest named it the best ice-cream in Canada. It is a super-premium ice cream. They use 16% butterfat and mix it very slowly so that it contains very little air – the result a high density, creamy ice-cream. They also use only the finest ingredients: fresh cream, real eggs, and sugar. Their flavours are made with fresh PEI berries or imported cocoa from Holland or pure natural vanilla. 32 fun flavours available like Gooey Mooey or Wowie Cowey.

Brehaut’s (Murry Harbour)

Located by the bridge in the picturesque fishing village of Murray Harbour, Brehaut’s has been discovered for their chowder “steaming hot, huge chunks of seafood served with fresh bread or a fluffy tea bicuit”
